Discipline: Casual Obedience
Personality: Aspen is a very atypical example of her breed in terms of behavior. Skittish and quiet, she can be hesitant and shy in new situations, especially when they involve strange people. She does not trust strangers at all and tends to either keep her distance, hide or cling to one of her handlers. She's a bit of a velcro dog who loves to be right on the heels of her favorite people as they go about their business. Though this can be annoying and obstructive when most large dogs do it, Aspen is surprisingly careful about it. She's careful to avoid stepping on feet and is very graceful and sure-footed in her movements. That cautiousness that keeps her from approaching strangers only works in her favor when avoiding dangerous obstacles. Anyway, as long as she isn't pushed too far outside of her comfort zone, Aspen is an angel- very keen on her handler's commands and an excellent listener with beautiful grace and form. If she'd been born a standard color, she would've made an excellent show dog and is so far excelling at obedience.

Background: Aspen was purchased by one of the staff members when an email was sent out alerting us to her presence. She was the last of a handful of puppy mill dobermans left at a closing rescue organization, and they'd simply run out of time needed to socialize poor Aspen and find her a good home. So, with the pound looming over head and her skittishness working against her, STS was quick to jump to her aid. Originally, the plan had been to simply rehabilitate her, work on her social short comings and make her more comfortable around people, before eventually finding a new home for her. However, Aspen proved to be difficult to rehabilitate and has been with the stables ever since.

Her behavior improves by the day. When she arrived, she was too frightened of strangers to even come out of hiding. Now, she is more open, sometimes even timidly approaching strangers and giving them a distanced sniff. However, she still seems to greatly prefer the company of other dogs, particularly other females. It is suspected that she was to be used for breeding in the puppy mill and may have had bad experiences with males. She simply has a tendency to distrust men, dogs, stallions, anything with a masculine scent to it, she tends to give a wide birth.

I love this and the doberman. Too bad it's not free...or is it?
